### The
# Mortali
>[!quote|gloss]
>They were a wretched cult best forgotten; much like everyone who ever threw their lives away to join it.
>[!card] About
>The Moratli were a former sect of [[Dawnguard]] and a specialised division of [[Dawnguard|The Clergy of Grigori]], before being disbanded in 4227, and later on replaced by the [[Inquisition]].
>
>They were a sect of specialised priests, who were tasked with the religious or spiritual practice of evicting demons, djinns, or other malevolent spiritual entities from a person, or an area, that was believed to be possessed, called an [[Lumière d'Étoile#Exorcisms|exorcism]].
>
>Many, many years ago, however, during the [[Siege of Maglenia]] in Fortuma, the Mortali had lost their sight of the light of Étoile, and had inverted their knowledge instead now bring forth demonic hosts to the material plane, where they seek suitable hosts to incubate the hellspawn, then on becoming known as the ‘[[Disciples of the Lesser Keys]]'.
>
>After the corruption of a sect of The Dawnguard, The Mortali were completely eradicated; the use of major exorcism becoming tightly regulated, and banned to all except a select few. Now, only seven exorcists exist within Lavitra. These seven must seek explicit permission from the [[Lumière d'Étoile|Illuminé Church]] to perform any major exorcism, and even then a majority of being allowed only within the royal family and to any noble blood.
>
>Exorcisms otherwise are more seen as a myth to the commonfolk, with a majority either not believing in its existence or not knowing what it is at all.
